What Whitewater Kayaking Lessons Look Like in Bend: Film Makers Environmentalists and Snowboarders
Another whitewater kayak lesson began for Bend Kayak School this evening with a 2.5 Day Whitewater Kayak Beginner Course that started off at Deschutes Brewery. I love getting to know new interesting students and all that they do in the world.
We have a screen writer/film maker, a river guide and snowboard instructor turned marketing major and a Geologist that does environmental cleanup. Our conversation over Deschutes Brewery Publick House food was interesting to put it mildly. If you want to know how to become a Screen Writer, we had the goods... funding for environmental activism, we found out how to make it happen, and living out of a van while working for Yelp as a marketer, we got the beta on how to make that happen too.
River talk was a big part of our evening, and we spent most of our time talking about safety hydrology, past experience and goals aas well as what is coming up in our weekend of whitewater kayaking... but it was also about breaking down barriers through building trust and getting to know each other, the other foundations of learning so that as we challenge ourselves over the coming day we do it in an environment that feels safe and supportive. The latter agenda is just as important as the first and what we strive for in every class.
Awesome start to another great weekend of kayaking immersion with basic skills and solid foundations! I can't wait to spend some time on the water with these guys!
